I found that it was better to give our pupils just a couple of days to decide on their book. With a short deadline it meant that they had to think about their choice straight away and it created a buzz while they chatted about what they're all going to pick. It also avoided the risk of their leaflet getting lost into the depths of their school bags forever!

The posters are great for grabbing the pupils' attention! I made a display of them in the library along with the copies of the books.

I sent the leaflets out with the register to each form and then arranged with the form tutors a time for their pupils to visit the library, look at the website and browse through their books before they made their final decision.

You wouldn't believe the difference that a free book can make to a library orientation session! Once word had got around the school that there was an added incentive they were all chomping at the bit to get in! It's a fantastic way for Year 7s to start the year - it was lovely to see such excitement about reading!

With such a great start to the year I couldn't let the enthusiasm for reading drop. I started an after school book group so that everyone could discuss the books they've been reading and get an opportunity to recommend other books to each other.
